“Self-reflection” is described as a meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions, and motives. My photographic series, Self-Reflections, seeks to define my own ideas of who I am, while exploring the following notions: self-portrait, twins, sisters, alter ego, doppelganger, nostalgia, fantasy, and narrative. The idea of taking self-portraits (specifically involving doubles of myself), started in 2008 when I had taken a self-portrait and mirrored it in Adobe Photoshop. By having two of myself in the picture, new levels of dimension, complexity, narrative, and endless opportunities arose for my photographs.

I photographed the “twins” in a variety of different environments, some locations include: a dense forest, the shore of a lake, sunny fields, dirt roads, in the harsh winter snow, inside abandoned buildings, my apartment, and the room I grew up in back home. The environments, costuming, and expressions of the “twins” all become essential to portraying aspects of their relationship and personality traits. The “twins” play out fictional scenes based upon personal aspects of my life that are heavily influenced by my past as an only child, but also seek to portray a fantasized future with a metaphoric, non-existent twin sister.

With these images I hope to balance a range of possibilities, from romantic and fantastical, restrained and direct, to being dense with visual complexity. The figures tend to be strikingly allegorical and dramatic, being the constant focus of the image, yet they are developed with an eye for their surroundings. The colors are vivid and the lighting tends to waver somewhere between being natural and artificial. The compositions are deliberate and often produces a scene that appears rigidly staged. To counteract the staged quality of the compositions, the figure’s comfort with the camera lens gives brings forth an overall sense of ease and naturalness to the images. In an attempt to create a completely realistic scene, the “twins” are photoshopped very carefully into their surroundings, shadows are added, and layers become overlapped or hidden. Playing with the idea of a fictional existence, the “twins” confront the viewer and ask for a confirmation of their presence in each photograph, but more importantly, they ask for a confirmation of their own existence- leaving only the viewer to decide their fate.

Below is a photograph I recently created that touches on the idea of resisting domestic responsibility from a woman’s standpoint. After showing this photograph to one of my art advisors, Will Contino, he told me to watch the movie Far From Heaven as the vivid colors, time period, and femininity in my photograph strongly relate to the overall aesthetic quality of the movie. After looking at a few screen shots of the movie, I decided to buy it and I’m so glad I did. Will was right, my photograph looks as if it was directly inspired from the movie, even though ironically I have never seen or even heard of Far From Heaven before. I plan on making more photos similar to the style of my photo below, focusing on vivid colors, costuming, and mood. I feel that I have always concentrated on these topics with my other photos, but this one I feel has the strongest combination and representation of the three.

I came across the work of Brooke Shaden a couple weeks ago, and I already made a photograph inspired by one of hers, but I feel that my attempt wasn’t successful. Even though it was a failed attempt, I feel that I learned a lot during the process and would like to continue to emulate Brooke’s unique photographic style. I’m attracted to Brooke’s photography because she transforms conceptual ideas into beautiful photographs that emulate paintings by the masters; she uses carefully articulated light, composition, and meaning, but she also uses herself as a model. One aspect that makes her photographs so surreal, is her impeccable Photoshop abilities. She has created photographs of herself inside of a glass jar, receding into a wall, and having contorted limbs. I admire Brooke’s use of texture over her photos, which adds a beautiful painterly like quality to the photographs. Today I friended her photography page on Facebook and took a glance at her photo albums. In one album she has pictures from one of her shows at the Flazh!Alley Art Studio in San Pedro. In these photos, I was able to see the way she displayed her photography on the gallery walls. I could see that she had the photos printed on canvas and stretched over a frame- the photographs looked stunning. This form of printing on canvas further drove the idea of there being a fine line between painting and photography within her work. I sent Brooke a message over Facebook asking her how exactly she printed her photographs. This was her response:

“I got them done locally here in LA, specifically at a printer in Van Nuys called Opus Editions – the man who prints there has been a lifeline for me, very ready to help me and give advice and whatnot..in fact I just spent an hour talking with him today. Anywho, my prints are giclee canvas prints – giclee refers to the style of ink-jet printing and it has archival qualities. They are stretched over 2-inch stretcher boards and range in size between 20X20 inches and 40X40 inches. I chose to print on canvas because I want my photos to blur the lines between photography and painting, and the canvas really helps to do that. However, I have certain images that I would never want to print on canvas, and for that my printer does giclee on fine art matte paper.”

It was really great to get a response and better understand how she prints her photographs. Printed on canvas was always something I have wanted to try with my photography, and now I think I finally got that extra push to do it, so thanks Brooke! I also found out that Brooke graduated from the Film and English programs under the Temple University main campus, which hits close to home because I went to Tyler School of Art (Temple University) for my freshman year of art school.

This is a video interview of Brooke Shaden talking about her photography:

So I “stumbled upon” this really great website called StumbleUpon.com and I think I am already addicted to it. The idea behind StumbleUpon is that you pick a category, in my case I naturally chose Photography, and you hit this “Stumble!” button and it will load a random page related to photography. There is also a thumbs up button and a thumbs down button that you can click as you make your own judgment of the page, and all of your thumbs up clicks end up being saved in your favorites category. You can even get these buttons permanently attached to whatever web browser you are using, so there is no need to go to a website to start stumbling. It’s great, so far I’ve seen a wide range photography that I probably would have never seen within only a few minutes at my computer. Now my knowledge of contemporary photographers and their work has grown, I completely recommend checking it out for yourself. Here is a video that I came across using the site, it features really creative stop motion photography:

I was recently told to look up the work of Jeff Wall and listen to what he had to say about his work in interview form. I found a great video interview of him from his show at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery in 2008, which celebrated the gallery’s 40th anniversary. I really enjoy what Jeff says about narratives in photography. He states:

I’ve got a reputation of having very narrative content in my pictures, but I don’t really see my pictures as being any more narrative than anyone elses. In fact, I don’t feel that pictures are very narrative. All they do is suggest what it might be like to experience a narrative, they don’t really create one because they don’t have the ability. A narrative has to go in time, pictures can never do that. So what’s beautiful about them is that you feel like you might be in the presence of some kind of narrative, but you aren’t.

As I am writing this I am in a state of excessive excitability and admiration. Some how, I came across Crista Parravani’s work looking for another photographer, of which I still haven’t found just yet. But accidentally stumbling across Crista’s photography was far from a mistake. Out of all the photographers I have seen that are doing the theme of twinned portraits, I feel that I have the closest connection emotionally as well as visually with Crista’s series titled “Kindred”, even more so than the work of Kelli Connell. The landscapes she chooses to photograph, the costuming, composition, lighting, and emotional tension are all very similar to what I am trying to convey with my own work. However, the major difference between our work is that along with herself, Crista uses her twin sister Cara as the second person in her photographs- no need for Photoshop here. I find it interesting, especially since she is using an actual twin sister, that the dialog or tension between the two is similar to what I have been showing between my two selves. Her images are very straightforward. There isn’t an over abundance of activity in the photograph, but there is mostly a subtle dialog between the figures and the setting of the photograph they are placed in. The photos seem very calm, quiet, bleak, and somewhat detached from the rest of the world. This especially reflects a current theme within my own photography, as those words describe how I feel most of the time. I also get a strong sensation of timelessness or nostalgia when I reflect on Crista’s photographs, which again is another theme I have been incorporating into my photographs. Even though I don’t have a twin sister like Crista, I can’t help but feel a deep connection with her through our closely related bodies of work. The twin theme and even the landscapes of our work is strikingly similar, I almost feel as though she is my long lost twin, mirroring the thoughts in my head and photographing them

Here are some of Crista Parravani’s photographs from her series “Kindred”:

This is Crista Parravani’s artist statement from “Kindred”:

This series of images was made with my identical twin sister Cara, beginning in the winter of 2003 and continuing through 2004. The landscapes become the medium for the telling of our fractured relationship. The two of us play out a drama that is both personal and familial, where identity is changeable, where past and present merge. Childhood, narcissism, sexual confusion, and family romance: these are all things that keep us tied to our singular path, and keep us longing for separate lives.

The images are intended to be painterly, lush and sexual, broken and tangled. They are the only true means to describe the union of loathing and love that binds us. We watch through the lens because we ask you to confirm our presence here, and confront you on a level plain, defying the instinct for objectification that is common in the painting of portraits of women in the 18th and 19th Centuries. We confront the viewer also with stark questions, asking who has control of this struggle: the viewer, the photographer, or the subject. In the brutal cold of winter, in the harsh light of summer, I force us back to those woods, and the command I exert is also the manipulation over the relationship I desire. I am the author of these images, but by controlling my other I am controlled in turn. Finally there is no before or after, only a static journey–a fantasy to fill a barren space. We are transformed into creatures of longing and hope.

To fuel my inspiration for my twined self portraits, I decided to research other photographers that are making similar self portraits to mine. After several hours of browsing the web, I did not find a single well known or famous photographer with related work, but I did find where the idea of cloning self portraits began. I came across this website that defines the beginnings from an art history standpoint, here is an excerpt from the website:

The first artificially-created human clones date back to the 1860s. Clever photographers, ever on the watch for new ideas to boost business, developed several techniques to duplicate people — causing them to appear twice in the same photograph. “Every Man His Own Twin!” boasted one ad, neatly explaining the appeal of this novelty. These double-exposure images were no passing fad– they were popular for more than three decades.

Special plate-holders and rotating partial lens caps were among the devices used to expose half of the negative at a time. After the first exposure, the subject of the photograph would quickly move into a different position so the second half of the picture could be made.

Of course, real twins of various ages were also photographed in similar studio settings, making it difficult to determine which double portraits are the result of photographic manipulation. One indicator is the presence of a slightly lighter or darker line bisecting the photograph, but sometimes this line is so artfully concealed that the trick goes undetected.

In many cases, the novelty of camera-created cloning was enough to satisfy a studio’s clientele, but there is little of interest to the modern viewer in two awkwardly-posed portraits of the same person shown side-by-side. The images in this exhibition, however, demonstrate that creativity and imagination can elevate a technical innovation beyond the level of gimmickry. It’s an important lesson: even the most innovative digital effects of the 21st century can fall flat if they serve no narrative purpose.

This history is especially interesting to me right now, because in my History of Photography class we are currently learning about this time period up until the early 1900s. Here are some early photographs of the process:

Today a fellow photo major came up to me and told me that I should check out Kelli Connell’s work, he said her photography is very similar to my current body of work. After looking at Kelli Connell’s website, I immediately felt a deep connection with Kelli, as our work is very closely related, almost in a creepy sense. Like me, Kelli is photographing herself twice in her images, while creating interesting interactions and narratives between her two selves. In her own words Kelli writes, ” By digitally creating a photograph that is a composite of multiple negatives of the same model in one setting, the self is exposed as not a solidified being in reality, but as a representation of social and interior investigations that happen within the mind.” I especially like that she mentioned she is documenting what happens in the mind, which is true for my own work even though I haven’t thought about it in that way before. Comprehending what Kelli writes about her work is valuable to me, as it allows me to hear thoughts about the same kind of work, but from a different perspective, which in turn gives me a greater understanding and ability to explain my own work in greater detail. One aspect of Kelli’s photography that differs from my own is her representation of an autobiographical questioning of sexuality and gender roles that shape the identity of the self in intimate relationships. Although I may touch on this topic accidentally with my photography, that is not the main focus of my work. However, Kelli executes this idea beautifully by playing the role of masculine and feminine versions of herself. The way Kelli produces her images also differs from my process. She first takes images of herself with film, then scans the negatives into the computer, and finally digitally manipulates and merges the images together using Adobe Photoshop. I love the film quality of the images, and I feel that knowing they were created with film further pushes the feeing that you are looking at a truthful, un-manipulated photograph. It’s hard not to think that most digital images haven’t been manipulated in one way or another, especially by seeing such images in magazines, portraying picture perfect celebrities and models. Here are a few of Kelli Connell’s images that I particularly enjoy:
